The Fluid Mechanics of Thrombus Formation
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Experimental data are presented for the growth of thrombi (blood clots) in a stagnation point flow of fresh blood. Thrombus shape, size and structure are shown to depend on local flow conditions. The evolution of a thrombus is described in t~rms of a physical model that includes platelet diffusion, a platelet aggregation mechanism, and diffusion and convection of the chemical species responsible for aggregation. Diffusion-controlled and convection-controlled regimes are defined by flow parameters and thrombus location, and the characteristic growth pattern in each regime is explained. Quantitative comparisons with an approximate theoretical model are presented, and a more general model is formulated. iii PRECEDING.PAGE BLANK NOT FILMED"

Experimental Fluid Mechanics of Pulsatile Artificial Blood Pumps
The fluid mechanics of artificial blood pumps has been studied since the early 1970s in an attempt to understand and mitigate hemolysis and thrombus formation by the device. Pulsatile pumps are characterized by inlet jets that set up a rotational “washing” pattern during filling. Strong regurgitant jets through the closed artificial heart valves have Reynolds stresses on the order of 10,000 dyn...

Platelets as cellular elements are the constituants of blood tissue and their main function is to participate in hemostatic processes. The glycocalyx which intimately surrounds the platelets contains a number of glycoproteins which are responsible for blood group specificity (ABO), tissue compatibility (human leukocyte antigen = HLA) , and platelet antigenicity. Platelets contain granules which...
متن کاملHypereosinophilic Cardiac Involvement Presenting With Left Ventricular Massive Thrombus and Cardioembolic Stroke: A Case Report
Introduction: It is well known that the tendency toward thrombosis is increased in cancer patients. The increase in cancer procoagulant and tissue factor levels, endothelial damage, and stasis due to compression are among the most accused causes of thrombosis in cancer patients. Hypereosinophilia is a rare condition that causes endothelial damage leading to thrombosis. <s...
متن کاملIntracardiac Thrombosis in Sickle Cell Disease
In patients with sickle cell disease, thrombotic microangiopathy is a rare complication. Also in sickle cell disease, intracardiac thrombus formation without structural heart diseases or atrial arrhythmias is a rare phenomenon. We herein describe a 22-year-old woman, who was a known case of sickle cell-βthalassemia, had a history of recent missed abortion, and was admitted with a vaso-occlusive...
متن کاملTranscatheter aortic valves produce unphysiological flows which may contribute to thromboembolic events: An in-vitro study
PURPOSE Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has been associated with large incidence of ischemic events, whose sources are still unclear. In fact, sub-acute complications cannot be directly related to the severity of the calcification in the host tissues, nor with catheter manipulation during the implant. A potential cause could be local flow perturbations introduced by the implantat...
